It all started when I was looking through my Ballard Design's magazine..looking for things i liked and inspirations I could use for my next project...and yippe....found it!
My inspiration was Ballard Design's Sacha Mirror - an absolutely a beautiful piece for a ridiculous amounts of $$$
If you haven't seen the Sacha Mirror...here are some pics from their website...pretty damn good..right..
So lets get to the details...How much does Sacha Mirror costs?
$359 (plus taxes) for 1 square piece (Each piece is 39.5")
I needed more than 1 for my dining room...but I really can't afford that price tag. What do I do...think of a DIY plan...
I came across a blog by Danika and Cheryle and got my creative juices flowing...
So here is what I did...I ordered 6 of the Grace Overlays...Mind you these overlays don't come out to be cheap when you order multiple pieces...for me I paid $189 + shipping+taxes for 6 pieces... Next, I went ahead and ordered the mirror.. from Craft Supplies for Less..bought 6 boxes of 3" mirror for $15/box +taxes+shipping...total:$90 I had glue and some acrylic paint at home...so no cost there..and now beings the fun project..
My total cost for this project: $279
If I had ordered this mirror from Ballard Designs (assuming 3 pieces)..my cost would have been $1077..
In between 7 month baby, work and other commitments, it took me around 3 weekends to get this project finished..
Step 1: Decide what color you want your overlays to be.
Step 2: I then glued the mirrors to the overlays. Make sure the overlays are on a flat surface so that the mirrors don't slide. Also, glue the mirrors well to the overlays
Step 3: I wanted the mirrors to be slightly away from the wall so I glued the chair pads...they are very cheap..you can get them at any home improvement store.
Lastly, you could have glued some sort of hanging hooks. I used gold and silver pins to hang mine...you can hardly notice the pins.
So here is how mine came up...I still have a lot of work to do in my dining room...but guess this is a good start..
Next...I need some art work on the opp wall...
Will wait till sth else catches my eye..
Until then..take care all..and keep getting inspired..
:-)

looks fantastic! well done!
ReplyDeleteSimply amazing!!!!!! Thank you for sharing and inspiring others. I too wanted the Ballard mirrors but refused to pay that astronomical price. This has inspired me to recreate it. I think my wife will be very happy! Thanks again...
